It manages your digital negatives in a database, lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable and enables you to develop raw images and enhance them. A virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers. In terms of bugs, I have had a few issues with opencl causing weirdness (specifically with AMD's ROCm implementation of opencl) when enabled, particularly with the local contrast module when set to local Laplacian, but that seems to have resolved itself.Darktable for PC is an open source photography workflow application and RAW developer. Fortunately you can hide modules if you never use them. There is a fair amount of redundancy in the modules, as new modules with better algorithms superseded old modules, but old modules stayed to maintain backwards compatibility with old edits. In terms of UI, it is pretty similar to Lightroom, although different enough it will take some getting used to. With the ability to combine drawn and parametric mask in almost every module, it even covers an awful lot of what I would have used Photoshop to do as well. Other than the inbuilt panorama's-which I never found Lightroom to be overly good at-I don't think I have found anything I could do in Lightroom and now can't. I've used Darktable as a raw editor pretty much exclusively for about 2 years. I can work much faster in Darktable now, but it took some front-loaded effort and time investment. I pretty much only use Darktable now that I’m familiar enough with it, but it definitely took time to figure out what modules were most important to me and make some presets that were better starting points for me. But especially if you just want to apply changes to an entire image and/or export and do more complex editing in something like GIMP, RawTherapee may suit that workflow better. It can definitely give you great results in less time, and I think it’s a little more friendly for batch processing and exporting.

The UI is more like traditional RAW editors and similarly it makes it harder to throw your image into complete chaos. RawTherapee is an alternative that is easier to use but a little more limited. It also makes it easy to do pretty crazy things to your image many settings you can push far beyond what would be reasonable for a decent initial RAW capture, and the default settings for many modules are often not great. I’d say there is a moderate learning curve. Darktable is pretty powerful and somewhat customizeable, but the UI isn’t great.
